Hey, how are you?

"How are you?" It's the most common greeting right behind "hi".

However, I find it hard to say sometimes. The reason?

I don't mean it.

You run into someone and say "hey, how are you?" but you don't really stop to care how someone actually is. The most common response is, "good, how are you?" And you automatically say "good." Whether you're doing good or not.

Someday, I want to have the guts to tell someone the whole truth about "how I am". They ask me, "how are you?" and I respond, "well, my hair is frizzy, and that makes me sad. My hip hurts all the time, and I'm worried that something is wrong. I'm stressed out because my boss is out of town, which makes me the boss regent and that is a lot of work! My boyfriend is. . . "

You catch my drift.

It just makes me stop and wonder if people are doing as "good" as they say they are. Which would mean that most greetings start out with lies.

Just an interesting point to ponder the next time you run into someone.
